Commemorating La Grange’s Worst Natural Disaster – 150 Years Later

Yellow Fever Epidemic Marker is Unveiled

At the dedication Wednesday of the state historical marker in the old La Grange cemetery commemorating the devastating yellow fever epidemic of 1867, Fayette County Historical Commission chair Rox Ann Johnson recalled asking county commissioners two years ago for funds to erect one historical marker a year. “The first one I wanted was the yellow fever marker,” she said.

“It takes about two years to get a marker approved,” Johnson noted. “And here we are two years later on the 150th anniversary of the event dedicating this marker.”
