Century Old Farmhouse Destroyed by Fire

A century-old farm house on Dubina Weimar Road burned to the ground Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Schulenburg Fire Chief Jeff Proske said it likely started from lightning.

No one lived in the home and there were no injuries.

A neighbor reported the fire around 4 p.m. after noticing smoke. The Fayette-Colorado county line runs through the property, but the house sat just inside Fayette County. Dispatchers called both the Weimar and Schulenburg volunteer fire departments. Flames had fully engulfed the house when the first firefighters arrived.

The property belongs to Douglas and Betty Jo Bartos of Temple. Douglas Bartos’s brother Harvey Bartos, who keeps a herd of cattle on the property, said the couple spent last weekend working at the home. Bartos said the couple had recently restored the two-story, cypresssided structure.
