Last Baby Born at St. Mark’s

It was a bittersweet morning in the St. Mark’s Birthing Center Friday.

For 12 years babies have been born there, but in a cost-cutting move, the hospital’s board of directors announced a month ago that the center would close for good Sept. 30.

But amidst the sadness of the end of an era, there was the celebration of a new beginning in one room.

The last baby born in the hospital, Hayes Marshall Cooper, arrived at 8:35 p.m. Thursday Sept. 28. He weighed in at six-pounds, 15-ounces, was 20-inches long and was resting comfortably Friday morning in the arms of his mother, Avery (Spindler) Cooper as proud father Collin Cooper, stood nearby.

The Coopers live in Muldoon.

Hayes was delivered by Dr. Shannon Juno, who has been delivering babies at St. Mark’s for more than a decade. She will continue to deliver babies at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and commute from La Grange.
