Texas Heroes Day to Remember Bravery of John Hill, Boy Soldier

Texas Heroes Day honors the volunteers who stepped forward to defend the young Republic of Texas when it was invaded by the Mexican Army in 1842.

This day in history will be commemorated on Saturday, September 16, in front of the tomb at Monument Hill State Park on the Bluff overlooking La Grange.

The ceremony continues a long tradition of descendent families decorating the tomb with flowers and wreaths, of remembering their stories, their military exploits, their failures on the battlefield and their eventual success.

The program begins at 9 am on September 16 with a retelling of the Dawson Massacre that occurred in 1842, six years after the Texas revolution, followed by the ill-fated Mier Expedition.
