Tough Lesson Learned

The saying goes, “You win as a team and you lose as a team.” Well, apparently you get disqualified as a team as well. At least that’s what happened to the Junior League softball team from Atlee, Virginia.

In case you are unaware of what I am referring to, some of the girls on the Atlee team posted a photo of them giving an inappropriate hand gesture to the host team on Snapchat (a social media format) and because of that inappropriate photo, the entire team was disqualified from the World Series tournament.

Now, I’m a big believer in consequences, but the question remains – Was this the appropriate consequence?

I have multiple friends whose children were fortunate enough to advance to that level in softball and there are mixed emotions at play. Some of the people I have spoken with feel that the Little League officials acted appropriately. The photo was inappropriate and a reflection of the team and of the Little League organization. Others feel that the girls in the photo should have been the only ones disqualified, leaving the others “unmarked” so to speak.
