What’s the Deal With All These Bugs?

It’s been a good spring for lovebugs and car washes in Fayette County. The amorous critters have been darkening hoods and windshields here for two weeks now. Even after a pair of morning cool snaps last week, they just keep returning.

“Business has been good for me,” said Chip Wied last Friday as he took a break from scraping bugs off the front of a cargo trailer.

Wied, who owns C&C Sales and Auto Care at the corner of Jefferson and Travis streets in La Grange, said he averaged 15 to 20 car washes a day last week as the lovebug population peaked. He even offered a $20 lovebug special last Thursday and Friday.

According to Fayette County AgriLife Extension Agent Scotty Willey, abundant rainfall earlier this year provided the lovebugs with ideal growing conditions during their larval stage. Those millions of baby lovebug larvae are now becoming adults.
