Unspoiled Hostyn Acreage Honored

Only a few acres of old prairie in Fayette County have escaped the plow since Europeans settled here almost two centuries ago. One such remnant is a six-acre patch in the corner of the Kallus-Kothmann Farm in Hostyn.

The Gideon Lincecum chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists presented a marker recognizing to the property’s owners, Jimmy and Marilyn Kothmann, on Saturday, April 22.

The master naturalists held a class at the property in conjunction with the marker dedication. USDA rangeland specialist Stephen Deiss of Victoria led the class.

“Less than one percent of Texas’ blackland prairie remains intact,” Deiss said at the class. “This land has never been dug with a plow. It’s good to recognize Jimmy for maintaining this. There’s not a lot of it left.”
