Underground La Grange Bar Getting a Final Clean-Out
As the heavy wooden cabinet emerged from the basement, Carol Janecka watched intently.
“That piece probably hasn’t seen the light of day in over 90 years,” she said.
The cabinet used to sit behind the bar in the saloon known as “The Hole” which sat in the basement of 207 West Travis St. in La Grange.
Long after it closed, “The Hole” remained a source of local lore even though cobwebs have replaced customers for decades.
The Travis Street entrance to “The Hole” was cemented over during the last sidewalk repair project, leaving a back-side stairway the only access to a once-hopping gathering spot, where today remnants of old beer bottle labels and rules (presumably for domino games) are still written on the wall in chalk...
