‘The Cure Starts Here’

The 17th Annual Relay For Life La Grange was held on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Leopard Stadium. Campsites were decorated with this year’s theme “Game On Cancer - The Cure Starts Here.” Eight teams with 75 participants walked laps throughout the event, raising money for a cure. The evening started with Mayor Jan Dockery welcoming our survivors, caregivers and teams; followed by the Pledge of Allegiance; and the National Anthem sung by Lisa and Marissa Muras. The survivors were honored with a survivor medal and then opened the Relay by walking the first lap with their caregivers. During the evening, team members participated in several games in keeping with the Relay theme. At dusk the Luminaria Ceremony was held with Brenda Rainosek giving a tribute following the lighting of 750 bags purchased in honor of loved ones fighting the battle against cancer or in memory of someone who has lost the fight. Teams raised money through bake sales, an online auction, silent auction, and a drive thru meal fundraiser that also served as a survivor meal donated by Koopman Catering.
‘The Stress of Uncertain Times’

Police are often the first people called when someone suffers a mental health crisis. In Fayette County, those calls go to Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Castleberry, the County’s crisis intervention officer.
Have You Hugged an Alpaca Today?

As part of efforts to focus on student mental health, Tuesday La Grange elementary hosted Loretta Hajovsky and her alpacas Pancho and Lefty, which are certified therapy animals. The students really enjoyed getting a break from their normal routine to hug the animals as part of an informational program on alpacas by Hajovsky, of Holman. As New Bridge Rises, Remembering The Opening of the Old One

The area around the Colorado River along Business Highway 71 is a busy place these days as a new bridge is being built next to the old bridge that has stood there for 80 years. Junell (Schroeder) Van Horn, who now lives in Horseshoe Bay, thinks her family may have been among the first to cross that 80-year-old Highway 71 bridge when she was just a baby.
Leps Win Homecoming Shootout 56-43

The new turf at Leopard Stadium is officially broken in now. The La Grange and Lago Vista football teams marched up and down that new turf Friday combing for 99 points and over 1,000 yards of offense before the Leps finally prevailed 56-43.
Schulenburg, Fayetteville, Flatonia Win District Matches

Fayetteville The Fayetteville volleyball team defeated McDade 25-2, 25-20, 25-13 Friday as the Lady Lions ran their record to 31-1 overall and 5-0 in district. Brooklyn Jaeger had 16 kills and Kayme Schley had 10.

Jury Sentences Nelson to Life in Prison for Murder

A Fayette County Jury convicted Dylan David Nelson for the 2017 murder of Jeremy Cornwell last Thursday, Sept. 23.

Oktoberfest on the LG Square is this Saturday

Oktoberfest on the Square is just around the corner. On Saturday, October 2, from 3 p.m.-7 p.m, the Rotary Club of La Grange is ready to bring you the best event yet. Oktoberfest is all about tradition, a traveling fun festival celebrating beer and rich German social customs has been around for over 200 years and is still celebrated annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, and La Grange.
Volatile Day for Fires Prompts Burn Ban

One of the busiest firefighting days in years kept local responders hopping from one fire to another Wednesday and then resulted in the county enacting a burn ban the next day. “We responded to six fires in all that day, but we were fortunate that they were kind of spaced out,” said La Grange fire chief Frank Menefee.
Weishuhn Crowned 149th Annual Schützenkönig

Cullen Weishuhn was crowned the 2021 Schützenkönig in Round Top Sept. 19. Cullen prevailed in a three-way shoot-out to take the crown of “Shooting King” with a 35 out of 36 perfect score. He was crowned that night (above) at a ceremony at the Round Top Rifle Hall. This was the 149th annual Schutzenfest.
Schulenburg Beats Weimar, Fayetteville Downs RT-C

Lady Lions Sweep The Fayetteville volleyball team defeated in-county rival Round Top-Carmine 29-17, 25-18, 25-20 Tuesday. The victory improves the Lady Lions’ record to 30-1 overall and 4-0 in district.
Lady Leps Spike Manor New Tech

The La Grange volleyball team had no trouble quickly downing visiting Manor New Tech Tuesday, needing less than an hour to sweep them 25-9, 25-9, 25-8. The victory improved their record to 3-1 in district and 12-23 overall.

Explosive Details Emerge in First Two Days of Nelson Murder Trial

The trial against Dylan David Nelson for the July 2017 murder of La Grange plumber Jeremy Cornwell began on Tuesday, Sept. 21. If convicted of first degree murder, Nelson faces five to 99 years or life in prison.

FBI: Threat Against Jewish Places of Worship Included Schulenburg Temple

The FBI contacted Schulenburg Police Department last week to warn of threats against Jewish places of worship, including the local synagogue, Schulenburg’s Temple Israel. The Juneteenth Committee welcomes all community members to join Saturday, Jan. 13, in honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At 11 a.m., the group will walk from the Fayette County Courthouse to the Fayette Public Library Gazebo as a show of unity. Local Expert Called in to Help Battle an Alaskan Ship Fire

The U.S. Coast Guard needed some expertise two weeks ago when a load of lithium ion batteries caught fire on a ship off the Aleutian Islands. The Coast Guard enlisted Galveston-based T&T Marine Salvage to help with the response. That’s when James Janda of Hostyn got a phone call.

Leps Stay Unbeaten in District Hoops Play

The La Grange boys basketball team stayed atop the district standings with a 72-39 road victory at Austin Achieve Friday. The victory, La Grange’s seventh in a row, improves the Leps to 16-8 overall and 3-0 in district.

Lady Leps Blast Austin Achieve 76-3

No matter how good your 2024 has started, it hasn’t been as good as the new year for the La Grange girls basketball team. The Lady Leps began 2024 with a 34-point win over Caldwell Tuesday, but that was just a warm-up for Friday’s 76-3 win over Austin Achieve.
