Fair Asks for Help to Fund New Food Court

Representatives from the Fayette County Fair appeared at the La Grange City Council meeting on Monday, July 25, to request assistance for their food court construction project at the Fairgrounds. The current food court, known as the German-Czech Mart, was built in 1972.

Winedale Program Immerses College Kids in All Things Shakespeare This past weekend, July 21-23, marked the opening of performances by the students of the Shakespeare at Winedale program. Over the past few weeks, these students have prepared three Shakespeare plays for public viewing: “Hamlet,” “As You Like It” and “Cymbeline.” This season’s cast boasts one of the program’s largest groups of students in recent semesters, with 19 in total.
Minzenmeyer Recognized as 2022 Hugh Hammond Bennett Regional Conservation Planner of the Year

Former USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) employee Glen Minzenmeyer was recently selected as the recipient of the 2022 Hugh Hammond Bennett Regional Conservation Planner of the Year Award by the National Association of Conservation District’s National Conservation Planning Partnership. Minzenmeyer worked for more than 37 years as a civil engineering technician in the La Grange, Texas, office before retiring in July 2022.

K-9 Unit Seizes 8.5 Kilos of Cocaine

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Friday, July 7, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Kolt, stopped a Toyota truck on Interstate 10 at the 664 mile-marker at approximately 4 p.m. for a traffic violation. After speaking to the driver Sgt. Thumann became suspicious that the vehicle was involved in smuggling illegal narcotics. Sgt. Thumann was given consent to search the vehicle. Thumann deployed his canine “Kolt” to conduct an exterior sweep of the vehicle. Thumann observed Kolt alerted to the odor of illegal narcotics on an ice chest in the bed of the truck. Thumann discovered approximately 8.5 kilos of Cocaine, with an estimated street value of $850,000 Dollars, hidden in the walls of the ice chest. The driver, Gil Suarez Ignacio (31) of Mexico, was arrested for felony cocaine possession and released to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.

Water Leak Affects 90% of Fayetteville Residents

On Thursday, July 13, the City of Fayetteville repaired a water leak on the corner of Rusk and W. Main Street. According to Fayetteville Mayor Mike Stroup, the water leak was caused by old piping that had broken the previous evening, Wednesday, July 11. The section of piping had to be completely replaced, so repairs began Thursday morning at 10:15 a.m. and were completed by 1 p.m. Roughly 90 percent of Fayetteville residents were affected by the water leak, and a boil water notice was put in place for 24 hours until the City could confirm that water was safe for drinking.
