Weimar & Gonzales Head Coaches Were Other Two Finalists for Schulenburg Job
Schulenburg ISD released the names of the finalists for the position of head football coach and athletic director in response to a public information request from the Fayette County Record.
The school board ultimately hired Clay Ferguson for the job on March 7. Ferguson, a first-time head coach, was previously the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Elgin High School.
Schulenburg ISD reported that 140 individuals applied for the position. Ferguson and two others were selected for second-round interviews. Those two were Wade Griffin and Joseph Rivera.
Griffin has been the athletic director and head football coach at Weimar since in 2022. Before that he was the athletic director and head football coach at four other schools: Giddings from 20182022, Brewer High in White Settlement from 2014-2018, Elgin High from 2011-2014 and Brookshire-Royal from 2003-2006. . According to his resume, Griffin has an overall record of 103-70 in 15 seasons as head football coach. Griffin has 25 years of total experience coaching football, including a stint at Navarro College in Corsicana as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Rivera has been the athletic director and head football coach at Gonzales since 2021. According to his resume, the Gonzales football team was 2-18 in the previous two seasons before Rivera’s tenure there. They’ve since gone 1417 in three seasons under his leadership. Prior to Gonzales, Rivera was an assistant head coach and assistant athletic coordinator at Moe and Gene Johnson High School, which is part of Hays Consolidated ISD. He was also the athletic director and head football coach in Pearsall from 20182019.
