Three Fayette County Athletes Medal at State Track Meet
Fayette County shined on Texas’ biggest track and field stage last week, with three locals winning medals at the state track meet.
Flatonia’s Charanza Wins Discus Bronze
On his sixth and final throw Friday at the state track meet, Flatonia’s Zachary Charanza vaulted into the medal stand with a discus toss of 158-feet, 8-inches to place third and win the bronze medal in the Class 2A competition.
Charanza, who has accepted a scholarship offer to throw for Louisiana-Monroe in college, also made it to state in the shot put, where he placed seventh with a distance of 49-4.25.
Fritsch and Schley Win State Silvers for Fayetteville
Fayetteville had a big day Saturday in the 1A competition. Lions senior Lawson Fritsch broke the state 1A pole vault record by clearing 15feet, 6-inches (the old record was 15-3). The only problem was that his competitor Jace Bennett of Utopia also broke the record and then some Saturday, winning gold by clearing 15-9. But Fritsch (who is vaulting collegiately for Mc-Neese State) held on for state silver. He also ran a personal record of 51.79 in the 400 meters to place 7th.
Fayetteville junior Jack Schley also won state silver by leaping 45-feet, 4.25-inches in the triple jump, just eight inches behind the state champ. Schley was also 8th in the long jump, clearing 20-feet 8.5-inches.
In the girls 4x100 relay, the Fayetteville team of Maycee Miller, Aubree Graeter, Cambree Denham and Olivia Dominey was 7th with a time of 51.73.
Fayetteville’s Cole Jurecka was 8th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.12.
La Grange senior Cordale Knapik tied for 8th place Thursday at the 4A pole vault event at the state track meet Thursday in Austin.
Knapik cleared 13-feet, 6-inches. The winner was Parker Williams of Decatur, who cleared 15-6.
