Third-Year LHS Team Tennis Squad Caps Most Successful Season Yet
The La Grange Team Tennis team played its bi-district playoff match on Tuesday against Caldwell but was not able to advance, losing 1-10. Although it’s the second year in a row to suffer a first-round loss to Caldwell, it does mark the most successful season for LG Team Tennis in its three years of existence. The team had a program-best season record of 5-2, attained its highest seeding at #3, and hosted the first team tennis playoff round in school history. The standout players were seniors Eleanor Carey and Ella Nygren, who defeated Caldwell’s #1 girls doubles team in three sets for La Grange’s only match win.
“I am extremely proud of the improvement these players have made, not only in skill level but in competitiveness and tennis IQ,” said Coach Chris Westall. “In last year’s playoff match against Caldwell, we barely won many points let alone games and this year we not only won numerous games but also won sets and an entire match. A big congratulations goes to Eleanor and Ella on a great achievement: to be a set down and come back to win in a nail-biting third set tiebreaker, epitomizes the grit and ‘never say die’ attitude required to win an extremely tough match like that.
“Caldwell has been an elite program for many years and although we are not at their level yet, the gap is closing. The entire fall team tennis experience for these players bodes well for the upcoming spring season.”
