Shorthorns Stun Top-Ranked Johnson City
The Schulenburg baseball team pulled off a playoff shocker Friday as the Shorthorns beat No. 1-ranked Johnson City 1-0 in a onegame 2A regional semifinal series in Seguin.
Jayse Janda drove in Aaron Janecek with the game’s only run in the top of the first inning, and that’s all the Shorthorns would need as Brycen Schramek pitched a complete game five-hit shutout with six strikeouts.
Johnson City pitcher Johnny Slawinski is a Texas A&M signee, and he struckout 14 Shorthorns Friday, but Schulenburg was able to get to him early – and actually, the Shorthorns had eight hits off him, including two each by Janecek, Jayse Janda and Zane Brenek.
Johnson City had come into the game with a 25-3 record.
Friday’s win improves the Shorthorns to 17-12 overall and they now advance to face Danbury (28-9) for the Region IV-A crown. Details of that series were not finalized at press time.
