Senior Splendor
B y any measure the Fayetteville boys basketball team is really good and has been for a while.
They went to the state semis two years ago, the state quarterfinals last year and this year they’ve jumped out to a 21-6 overall record and are ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 1A.
Friday they showed just how powerful they can be, beating a good Round Top-Carmine team 100-43.
A big part of the Lions success the last few years, and particularly this season, has been the play of the team’s five seniors.
We’re proud to honor Cole Jurecka, Jack Schley, Mason Fenhaus, Kasen Kocian and Kole Schmitt as this week’s Fayette County Athletes of the Week.
We caught up with these five after Friday’s big win over RTC to talk about not only that win but their season as a whole.
“ We played good defense and shot well tonight,” Jurecka said.
“ This team, we pride ourselves on defense and we work hard on the defensive end because we know we’re good on offense and we have a lot of boys that can score,” Schley said.
“ When we play these guys (RTC) we want to score and much as we can ... out of all the years I think this might be the best team we’ve had,” Fenhaus said.
“ I guess I did pretty good but you can always go better – get back in the gym and work hard,” Kocian said.
“ We’ve been playing together since we were little. We’ve always had the chemistry so that helps a lot. Being a freshman on varsity to now, it’s helped us a lot,” Schmitt said.
