Schulenburg senior Jayvan Luhrs has been a force at defensive end. But after some injuries on the Shorthorn offensive line, he traded in his No. 83 jersey for No. 77. That makes him our Fayette County Athlete of the Week.

“Jayvan brings a lot to our group,” said Schulenburg head coach Clay Ferguson. “He’s been a two-year captain for our team, so great leadership on and off the field. He’s a vocal dude but he also does a great job leading by example. You see his effort on Friday nights and there’s no question he gives everything he has for this team.”

On offense, Luhrs had been playing tight end. But ahead of the Kenedy game two weeks ago, Luhrs filled in at tackle on the offensive line.

“He’s willing to do whatever it takes to help us win football games,” Ferguson said.

“I’m just doing whatever I can do to help the team win,” Luhrs said.

Coach Ferguson implemented morning practices this year. Luhrs spoke about the adjustment to the new routine.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get up here, but I feel like throughout practice it helps stimulate the brain,” he said. “I think its a good thing.”

Luhrs said the pro athlete he looks up to the most is Maxx Crosby, defensive end for the Las Vegas Raiders.

“I like his style of play and I like his swagger mentality,” Luhrs said.

Besides football, Luhrs also plays basketball for the Shorthorns.

“I’m thinking about also playing track and baseball this year,” Luhrs said.
