Schulenburg Edges Flatonia in 5-Set Thriller to Decide District Champion
The Schulenburg volleyball team beat Flatonia in a thrilling five set match Friday that earned the Lady Horns the District 27-2A title.
Flatonia ends up as the district runner-up, and both teams will be in postseason action later this week.
In Friday’s match the Lady Horns won all the oddnumbered matches to prevail 25-16, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14.
Landry Zapalac had 53 assists and 23 digs for the Lady Horns. Haylee Vacek had 25 kills and 19 digs. Reagan Dusek had 13 kills and Greenli Van Zandt had 11. Michaela Kollman had four aces and 18 digs. Jenna Guentert had 33 digs.
The Lady Horns finish the regular season with a 30-14 overall record and a 8-2 mark in district.
Flatonia (7-3 in district) was led in Friday’s match by Kat Sullivan, who had 25 kills. Summer Sodek had 13 kills and Emma Kosler had six. Brynlee Zimmerman had 40 digs, Kosler had 23 and Sodek 16. Kosler had three aces. Sodek led in assists with 32 and Zimmernan had seven. Quinn Arnett had three blocks.
Flatonia’s playoff details are to-be-determined.
The Lady Horns will play a warm-up match Monday Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. against Hallettsville in Schulenburg.
Then the Schulenburg girls will open the postseason Thursday Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. vs. Yorktown at Seguin High School. The Lady Horns will play the second game of a playoff doubleheader that night following the 6 p.m. Cuero vs. Devine game.
