Last week in practice, Schulenburg Head Coach Clay Ferguson told his team he wanted a shutout. The Horns delivered Friday with a 41-0 win against Bloomington on Schulenburg’s homecoming night.

“We talked about it all week - the most important thing is the football game,” Ferguson said. “Homecoming is great. Jayse (Janda) was named homecoming king. That’s fun and all that stuff. But 41-0, that’s what it’s all about.”

Schulenburg elected to take the ball in the first half on what started out as a windy night at David Husmann Memorial Stadium. The southeast wind was so strong that it blew the ball off Bloomington’s tee twice before they were able to execute the kickoff. The Horns got the ball on the Bloomington 40 thanks to a good return by Nick Goode. Five plays later quarterback Owen Brenek reached the endzone on a keeper.

The Horns have struggled of late on extra points. Friday night the Horns tried out Preston Kahn at placekicker. His first attempt was blocked and he ended the night 1 for 4 on extra points.

The Horns had little trouble stopping Bloomington’s triple option offense.

“Defensively, coming out and playing a triple option team is one of those things you don’t see very often,” Ferguson said. “Our kids did a great job this week understanding it - tackling, dive and getting the quarterback in the pitch. I’m really proud of these kids. They took the coaching this week and answered the test tonight.”

After scoring the first touchdown on the ground, Brenek went on to toss four more. He had plenty of targets, too. Denver Carr, Janda and Jayvan Luhrs and Mason Kunschick all scored touchdown receptions. Brenek finished the night completing nine of his 12 passes for 172 yards, despite the windy conditions.

“This win is really nice,” Brenek said after the game. “I think it’ll carry us on a wave and hopefully we’ll beat Danbury real bad and Flatonia real bad, and give us a big high going into the playoffs.”

Houston scored the final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a fantastic run from the Bloomington 45. He ended the night with 161 yards rushing.

Houston also threw for a two-point conversion caught by Luhrs on a fake extra point in the first quarter.

The Horns improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in district after an exceptionally tough start to the season. They played the defending state champs, Ganado, last week in a game that ended 42-20. That’s the closest anyone in district has played Ganado with the exception of Kenedy, and Schulenburg beat Kenedy 47-26 in the district opener.

The Horns travel to Danbury this week. The Panthers are 3-5 overall and 0-4 in district. They lost to Weimar last week 56-0. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
