LG Girls Stay in First Place
In front of the biggest home crowd of the year (partially fueled from a really heated battle the last time these two teams met) the La Grange girls basketball team beat Smithville 58-33 at home Tuesday night.
Campbell Cooper led the way for the Lady Leps with 23 points. Avery Griffin scored 13. Hannah Gross scored eight, Ashtyn Smith eight, Mylah Blaschke three, Macie Collier three and Kylie Trlicek two. Sydnie Brenner scored 16 to lead Smithville.
“Smithville and La Grange is a big rivalry. I’m proud of the way the girls competed,” said La Grange head coach Ryan O’Neal.
The victory keeps the Lady Leps in sole possession of first place with a 24-8 overall record and a 6-0 mark in district.
Smithville dropped to 1215 overall and 3-3 in district.
Tuesday’s win caps a big recent stretch for the Lady Leps, following last Friday’s two-point win at Navasota, which originally vaulted the La Grange girls into first place all by themselves.
“We had two starters with four fouls in the third quarter, our starting point guard goes down with an injury in the fourth quarter, but we battled, moved the ball well. It felt like a culture win, a program win,” O’Neal said looking back at that Navasota win.
“This group of girls is something special,” Trlicek said.
The Lady Leps play at Bellville Friday.
