LG Coach Predicting Radically New Region, District for the Leps
The UIL will announce new high school sports competition districts and regions on Feb. 3 and La Grange head coach Kyle Cooper thinks big changes are ahead for the Leps.
“Looks like we almost have to go Region IV (playing more South Texas schools in the postseason),” said Cooper, whose Leps are currently on Region III (playing more East Texas schools in the postseason).
That change is primarily due to several El Paso and Houston ISD schools moving into 4A-Division II (which La Grange is in for football). Those additions really shake up the geographic make up of all the regions in Texas, and will have a domino effect on the Leps, Cooper said.
Historically, La Grange has fluctuated between Region III and Region IV.
Over the years, the longer Leps playoff runs, particularly in football but in a lot of sports, have come when La Grange is part of Region IV.
There just seems to be more powerhouse teams in East Texas than South Texas.
But more than just changes to their region are coming for the Leps.
Last year the Leps were in a football district with Giddings, Caldwell, Madisonville, Sealy and Bellville.
But Caldwell is moving down to 3A and Sealy is moving up to 4A Division I (big school).
When asked his best guess for what the Leps new football district would be, Cooper said “Maybe us (La Grange), Giddings, Salado, Navarro, Cuero and maybe a Lago Vista thrown in there.”
Here’s how those teams fared last year: Cuero (12-2) Salado (8-4) Lago Vista (6-4) La Grange (5-6) Navarro (3-7) Giddings (2-8)
So it seems like if this district did come to fruition, it would be about as tough as last year’s for the Leps.
As the Leps await official word of their new football district next month, Cooper is already crafting the nondistrict portion of his football schedule.
Here’s what that looks like:
2026 Tentative Non-district schedule for the Leps Week One – Navasota Week Two – Columbus Week Three – Navarro (would have to find a replacement if Navarro ends up in the district)
Week Four – Smithville Week Five – Brookshire Royal
Meanwhile, also next month, new realignments will be announced for the other sports districts as well.
For most non-football sports, La Grange is currently in a district with Smithville, Giddings, Bellville, Caldwell and Navasota.
Smithville is going to drop to Class 3A, so it will be interesting to see how much that district remains intact.
