bounce back.

One game after they lost their first district game to Navasota Friday the La Grange boy basketball was back to winning as they thrashed Smithville 76-19 Tuesday.

The Leps actually led this game 36-2 right before halftime and cruised to a win that improves their overall record to 18-9 and their district mark to 3-1.

“We really wanted to prove a point tonight,” said La Grange junior Conner Brooks. “During practice this week we really wanted to emphasis defense.

Smithville dropped to 1-21 overall and 0-4 in district.

Brandon Mathis scored 20 points (including four dunks) to lead the Leps. Hunter Gross and Conner Brooks scored 14, Cole Collier 13, Mason Kleiber six, Tristan Ulrich three, Dillan Johnson and Caleb Stokes two and Koen Zbranek one.

Jehdon Walker led the way for Smithville with seven points.

“Friday was a tough night, but Navasota is a very high quality opponent,” said La Grange head coach Trent Collier. “This was an opportunity to get that off of our minds. We talked about games like this, you are pretty certain of the outcome so then it’s do we win and are we frustrated with the win or do we win and we feel like we handled our business – and I felt like we handled our business tonight. I thought for three and a half quarters, we were an absolute nightmare defensively. We rebounded better than we have in a while. We’ve got to do that against Bellville Friday night and against Giddings next Tuesday. This is a really important two-game stretch. We win those two and we pretty much secure ourselves with the No. 1 seed for small school (postseason bracket) and we also set ourselves up to try to take one from Navasota here to split the district championship.”
