Lady Leps Improve to 2-0 in District By Beating Bellville 70-11
The La Grange girls basketball team makes it really tough for opposing teams to score.
And it’s led the Lady Leps to the top of the district standings.
On the heels of Friday’s 70-33 district opener at Smithville, the La Grange girls looked even more impressive Tuesday at home against Bellville, suffocating the Brahmanettes to win 70-11.
La Grange is now 20-8 overall and 2-0 in district as they head to Giddings Friday for another district game.
“We’ve played really good team basketball,” said head coach Ryan O’Neal. “In our game against Smithville we didn’t have anything working from the three-point line but we really scored well inside. Today it was the opposite. We were hitting our shots but struggling around the rim – but we did a good job changing things up on them defensively and sharing the ball.”
Bellville didn’t score at all the third quarter and scored only four points after halftime against a Lady Leps defense that never loses its intensity.
“It’s all of us working as a unit,” senior Ella Nygren said of that defensive intensity. “We executed exactly what we’ve been practicing. Everybody was ready – and we played as a team.”
“Defense is the one thing that when your offense is struggling you can fall back on. The one thing you can be more consistent with,” O’Neal said. “If you can play good defense you always give yourself a chance.”
The Lady Leps are no slouch offensively either. Senior Kylie Trlicek led the way for La Grange with 23 points and junior Campbell Cooper added 17.
Macie Collier scored 10, Ashtyn Smith scored eight, Ella Nygren six, Hannah Gross four and Avery Griffin two.
La Grange’s Kylie Trlicek scored a teamhigh 23 points Tuesday.
