Flatonia senior basketball player Kalen Scott missed all last season with a heart condition, but has come back strong this year.

She scored 14 points and played strong defense in Flatonia’s 75-46 victory over Schulenburg in Tuesday’s district opener.

“Kalen is a great kid. She was out all last year. Coming back to the court she was a little nervous, finally this past weekend she got back to that point on defense where she was getting into people’s grill, eating them up, causing issues,” said Flatonia head coach Bethany McLeod. “To see her get that spark back has been really fun.”

We’re proud to honor Scott as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week. We caught up with Scott minutes after Tuesday’s win.

Talk about tonight’s game and what your team was able to show.

“We’re working really well as a team. Right now we are working on communicating. Tonight was a big win, first game of district, 1-0, we’re excited to play more district games and win more.”

You missed all last season. Tell me about that.

“I was out with a heart condition. I couldn’t last very long on the court. We saw some doctors, got it all checked out. I was diagnosed with Tachycardia (a condition where the heart beats too fast), but I am all good to go now.”

How did you fight through that?

“Mentally I connected with God a lot. He showed me we can go through anything and He is right there my our side. I have my teammates supporting me. It shows me I can get through whatever and God is always going to be there.”

How how long have you been playing basketball?

“Since I was five.”

Do you have any basketball role models you look up?

“I look up to Paige Bueckers (WNBA) and Kawhi Leonard in the NBA.”

What’s at the top of your Christmas Wish List? “An I-pad and a laptop for school. I’m really excited for college.”

Speaking of college, do you know what you are going to do?

“I’m keeping my options open for basketball. I got accepted to a couple of colleges

See but if that doesn’t work out I have cosmetology on the side – so I could get my cosmetology degree and then go back and get my business degree.”

What is your dream job?

“I want to have my own business – do hair, nails, all that.”

Where is your favorite place in eat in Flatonia and what is your go-to order there?

“My favorite place to eat is McDonald’s and my go-to order is a 10-piece chicken nugget with ranch, a medium fry and medium sprite.”

Favorite class this year?

“I love them all.”

Last year the Flatonia girls basketball team made it to the regional finals, tying for the longest playoff run in program history. What are your goals for this season?

“We want to make it to state. That’s our top goal.”

What will it take to get there?

“Competitiveness, working together and building each day in practice and in games.”
