Jurecka Coming up Big for Fayetteville
Paige Jurecka is using her towering 5-foot-11 inch frame very well this season.
Jurecka, who is just a sophomore, has emerged as an important weapon for the Fayetteville girls basketball team this season.
She’s leading the team in rebounds and shot blocks, and though her role on the team is not usually that of a primary scoring threat, she also scored seven points in Tuesday’s big district win over Round Top-Carmine.
“Paige, she’s been a heck of a rebounder and a shot blocker for us this season,” Fayetteville head coach Marcus Sodek said. “You can’t teach size. She’s big in there for us, and she works hard.”
We’re proud to honor Jurecka as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week. He caught up with her minutes after Tuesday’s win over RTC. Here’s our interview with her:
Talk about how this season’s gone for you?
“It’s going pretty good. I’m just really excited to be playing and I feel like we are doing better. “
What was the key to tonight’s win? “The key was communication, making passes and playing together.”
Rebounding isn’t the most glamorous part of the game. You’ve got to be in there fighting for the ball. Talk about that part of your game.
“Being tall makes it a lot easier.”
How tall are you? “5-11” What else are you involved
in here at Fayetteville besides basketball?
“I also do track – throwing, shot and discus.”
What’s your favorite class this year?
“Floral Design.”
Do you have any pets?
“I have a cat and a dog. Milo and Jojo.”
What is the best thing to eat in the Fayetteville cafeteria?
“The pizza.”
What is the worst?
“Their burger days.”
What is at the top of your Christmas list?
“New shoes.”
Who is your funniest teammate?
“My friend Presley (Wallace).”
What will it take the rest of the season for this team to be successful?
“Working together, getting along and having fun.”
