Griffin Doing it All at LHS
La Grange junior Avery Griffin has been really busy this fall.
She was a star on the Lady Leps volleyball team, a varsity cheerleader and is now a powerful, tall starter for the La Grange girls basketball team that has started the season 6-0.
“Avery’s tough,” said La La Grange head basketball coach Ryan O’Neal. “She’s a great rim-runner for us. She’s either taking away a defender and allowing someone else to score or she’s sprinting out in front to get a transition lay-up. She’s a big threat for us.”
We’re proud to honor Avery Griffin as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week: We caught up with Avery just a few minutes after she scored 10 points to help the Lady Leps beat Wimberley Tuesday to improve to 6-0. Here’s our interview with her:
Talk about how this team has built a 6-0 record:
“It’s happened really fast. We were playing in our second round volleyball playoff match and the next day we were playing a basketball game. It was like my head was spinning. But we’ve put in so much work in the offseason. We’ve been getting in the gym every chance we can and really getting after it. It’s been great - and we’ve improved.”
You play volleyball, you play basketball and you run track. What’s your favorite? “Volleyball, for sure.”
What part of your basketball game are you most proud of and what part do you need to work on the most?
“I need to work on stam-ina right now coming from volleyball. Volleyball shape and basketball shape are very different things. I feel like right now I’m reading the ball well, but hope to get better at.”
It’s Thanksgiving week. What are you thankful for?
“My family. I know that’s such a basic answer but they have done so much for me. Not just basketball but volleyball too. There are there for me every single game. They travel to games to cheer for me and have my back.”
What is the best Thanksgiving side:
“Baked mac and cheese.”
Worst Thanksgiving side?
“Stuffing. Never liked the stuffing. “
What do you want to be when you grow up?
“At heart I want to be a teacher but I recently discovered marketing and design. I love that aspect of things. Wherever the wind takes me, I guess.”
