Nick Goode has had a heck of a spring for Schulenburg.

He was the only Shorthorn to place at the regional track meet (6th in the 300 hurdles) and has been playing well for Shorthorn baseball. He teamed with Connor Lichnovsky to no-hit Bloomington last week, he is a speedster on the basepaths and he was a receiver and defensive back for the varsity football team last fall.

“Nick’s one of our better kids in and out of the classroom,” said Schulenburg baseball coach Isaiah Barerra. “You ask him to do anything – he’s always going to do it. He’s always the last one off the bus, cleans the bus, picks up the baseballs. He does everything a coach wants, and is just a great kid.”

We’re proud to honor Nick Goode as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week.

We caught up with him Tuesday. Here’s our interview with him:

What’s your favorite sport?

“I’d have to go baseball. I’m been playing it since I was eight.”

In track you do the 300 hurdles. Some people think that’s the toughest track event. What drew you to it?

“Coach Hafley, he said try it out freshman year and I just got stronger at it and built from there, and started placing well.”

Have you ever fallen going over a hurdle in a race?

“Not in a race, but in practice.”

The Schulenburg track has been under construction all spring. How did you practice?

“One of our coaches painted a 200 meter track around our practice field, so I did my conditioning there, and we’d lay out hurdles about 13 feet apart and do drills, and also we were able to go to Weimar some days and practice on their track.”

You’ve got a “Goode’last name. Any recurring jokes you hear because of having the last name like “Goode?” “All the time ... Goode kid, oh he’s ‘good,’ how ironic.”

Do you have any nicknames? “I used to get called ‘Nickelodeon’.”

What’s your all-time favorite

memory on a baseball

field?

“In select baseball when I played for The Storm, our 14u team made it to the championship for 10 tournaments. It was a really good year ... I had the chance to hit a walk-off with the bases loaded and hit a gap shot.”

If you could take a trip anywhere this summer, where would you go?

“Probably Hawaii. I’ve always wanted to go there.”

What’s the best kind of Easter candy? “Starburst.”

You’re a sophomore. Do you have your driver’s license yet? What’s your dream vehicle?

“I do have my license ... I’d love a 1995-96 squarebody Ford truck.”

The baseball playoffs start next week. What will be the key for the Shorthorns to make a long playoff run? “Just staying focused and building as a team ... have confidence at the plate, while pitching or on the field.”

What do you want to be when you grow up? “I would love to make it in sports for sure, that’s every kid’s dream, but probably an electrician or an electrical engineer.”
