La Grange vs. Cameron
When: 7 p.m. Friday Where: Cameron 2024 Records: La Grange was 6-5. Cameron was 3-8.
Of Note: La Grange begins this season looking to take another step forward after a three-win improvement last season (they were 6-5 a year ago after going 3-8 the season before) ... Cameron, a 3A team, went just 3-8 last year and ran into eventual state champ Columbus in the first round. The Yoemen’s head coach Aaron Babino returns for a second season. He’s a former UT football player, who played for the Longhorns from 1996-1999. The Yoeman return six offensive and five defensive starts from last year.
Last meeting: La Grange beat Cameron 52-49 in overtime last year as Leps kicker Taylor Cook booted a game-winning 35-yard field goal. The Leps amassed 515 yards of offense but gave up 452. Clayton Cooper ran for 139 yards and three TDs. Lep Dwodney Thompson caught five passes for 123 yards and also returned a kick 96 yards for a TD.
Schulenburg vs. Sacred Heart
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Schulenburg 2024 Records: Schulenburg was 8-4. Sacred Heart was 6-5.
Of Note: Schulenburg is debuting a lot of new things in this season opener. It’s their first home game after massive renovations to their field and stadium, and the first game for new head coach Clay Ferguson, who was the defensive coordinator at Elgin last year. He’s got some explosive returning offensive weapons, but 2,000-yard passer Aaron Janecek has graduated ... Hallettsville Sacred Heart is coached by former Flatonia head coach Rodney Dowell and returns seven offensive and six defensive starters but lacks size on the line.
Last meeting: Schulenburg beat Sacred Heart 35-0 to open the season last year. The Shorthorns rushed for 337 yards and threw for 128 yards. The Schulenburg defense limited Sacred Heart to just 129 total yards. Da’Terrion Houston ran for two scores.
Flatonia vs. Louise
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Flatonia 2024 Records: Flatonia was 1-9 last season. Louise was 4-7.
Of Note: A lot has happened since these two teams met to start the season last year. Louise lost to Flatonia 33-6, but then really turned things around, sneaking into the playoffs and even winning a first round game over Charlotte 42-12. Flatonia, meanwhile, hasn’t won since beating Louise last year. Both teams have new head coaches. Flatonia assistant Matt Uzzell was promoted and Louise’s new head coach is Cameron Murrah, Stockdale’s former offensive coordinator ... Louise returns six offensive and six defensive starters. Flatonia returns seven offensive and six defensive starters.
Last meeting: Flatonia won 33-6 last year as Beck Zimmerman threw three TD passes (two to Kade Giese and one to Keegan Green)
