Through the first three games of the football season, freshman Adrian Anderson had a combined three carries for the Flatonia football team.

Then Friday night happened and everything changed.

After an injury to senior starting running back Koren Scott, Anderson was called on to replace him and the youngster made the most of the opportunity.

Anderson carried the ball a whopping 34 times for 277 yards and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs beat Three Rivers 42-13.

We’re proud to honor Anderson as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week after that breakout performance.

“It was amazing – felt pretty good,” Anderson said.

“I’m really, really really proud of Adrian,” said Flatonia head coach Matt Uzzell. “He wasn’t really in the plan but our senior running back Koren Scott got hurt on that first drive.

“Adrian and Koren are close buddies. Koren has kind of taken Adrian under his wing and when Koren went down, Adrian got his opportunity and he lived up to the ‘next man up’ mentality.”

Uzzell knew Anderson might be a good high school player after some big games as a middle school running back last year, but didn’t know how or when that would translate to varsity success.

“We knew there was a chance Adrian could be something special,” Uzzell said. “He’s still got a long way to go. He’s working, and his success bred some humility in him. He wants to be a better teammate, work harder and do better.”

Adrian was quick to credit his offensive line and his older brother, Flatonia sophomore quarterback Jaylon Anderson, for his success Friday.

“It was really cool watching Jaylon be the big brother as the game went on,” Uzzell said. “As Adrian started getting more and more carries you saw Jaylon take over some leadership roles to where he’s not just the quarterback but also big brother. I think it will help push both of them to be the best they can be.”

After Friday’s big debut, what’s next for the freshman star?

“I want to score as many touchdowns as I can and as a team go as far as we can,” Adrian said.
