Last year, the Flatonia girls basketball team tied the longest playoff run in program history as they marched to the regional finals.

Early indications are the Lady Bulldogs could be in for another historic season.

Flatonia jumped all over Schulenburg early, opening up a 21-2 lead and never looked back beating the Lady Horns 75-46 Tuesday in the district opener for both teams.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 10-1 with the win.

“Our goal is to always push the ball up the floor and get as many transition points as possible – tire the other team out,” said Flatonia head coach Bethany McLeod. “We just need to keep pushing forward, changing. We don’t want to peak right now. We’re still figuring out what works and adding to it.”

Flatonia senior Summer Sodek had a huge night, with a statistical triple-double. She scored 32 points, had 19 rebounds and had 10 assists.

“We are really determined this year and working hard,” said Sodek, who has accepted a scholarship to play for Texas Women’s University next season. “Everyone is putting in a lot of time, working towards that (building on last year), and I think we will go far.”

Flatonia had three other players reach double figures in scoring Tuesday. Seniors Kalen Scott and Dani Vinklarek each scored 14 and Jalee Trussell scored 10.

Trussell also grabbed 14 rebounds.

“It’s fun to coach all these girls,” McLeod said. “They push each other and they push me.”

While it wasn’t the district opener Schulenburg hoped for, new Lady Horns head coach Richard Ramsey is excited about his young group of Lady Horns, who fell to 6-5 with the loss but played Flatonia close after the early deficit.

Sophomore Miranda Bonner led the Lady Horns with 21 points, including five threepointers.

Ava Bubela came off the bench to score eight and Jenna Guentert scored six.

“Hats off to Flatonia, they came out and hit shots and we didn’t hit the shots we needed to,” Ramsey said. “Down that much early, it was hard to dig out.

“We went to the state semis in volleyball, so we haven’t been at this (basketball) a whole month. They’ve done a great job in a new system (Ramsey is the Lady Horns’ third head coach in the last three years). We’re very young, and they are eager to learn. We’re trying to get better every single day, and hopefully we can end up a team like Flatonia is.”
