Fayetteville Beats RTC 49-26
In a district basketball battle between county neighbors, the Fayetteville girls used a big second half surge to defeat Round Top-Carmine 49-26 Tuesday.
The Lady Lions led by just five points at halftime, but in the blink of an eye after halftime Fayetteville upped that lead to 15 points and never looked back.
“We changed some things up in our press a little bit but the main thing after halftime was that our effort picked up,” said Fayetteville head coach Marcus Sodek. “We ran the floor better, got some transition points.”
Points were really hard to come by, for both teams, early Tuesday.
Fayetteville led 14-9 at halftime but then Fayetteville outscored RTC 18-8 in the third quarter.
Cambree Denham scored 10 of her game high 22 points in that pivotal third quarter.
“Cambree came to play tonight, heck of a game,” Sodek said.
“We had a good press and communication and had better passes this game,” Denham said.
Fayetteville improved to 2-0 in district and 7-11 overall.
Devynn Moeckel also had a huge game for Fayetteville with 11 points, 10 steals and a team-high eight rebounds. Paige Jurecka scored seven for the Lady Lions, Shae Sladek scored six and Scotti Beseda scored three.
For RTC, Bree Dooley scored eight. Liliana Salinas, Madison Markwardt, Halle Phoenix and Jalen Bage all scored three. Avery Lamson and Morgan Nelius scored two. Jaelyn Ahrens scored one.
RTC dropped to 1-1 in district and 2-5 overall.
Tuesday’s loss for the Cubettes comes after they won their district opener last week 87-15 over Richards.
“I saw a lot of bad basketball tonight,” said RTC head coach Caitie Weishuhn. “We’ve got to play better. We put up a really good game in our first district game against Richards, everything went right. We’ve gotta take care of the basketball and play more physical. We didn’t make the adjustments we needed to make.
“We’ve gotta get tougher with the basketball in our hands.”
