DAR Invites Local Students to Share What America Means to Them in Nationwide Contest

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are sponsoring a unique opportunity for the youth of our county (grades 3-12) to participate in a Nationwide contest that invites students to share their perspectives on what America means to them. Students will have a chance to earn an unforgettable field trip experience at some of the nations’s most iconic historic and cultural landmarks.

The La Grange Juneteenth Committee held the fifth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Walk on Monday, Jan. 19. This year organizers honored the late Rodney Johnson, a prominent member of the La Grange African American community. LMS One-Act Play Jan. 30

The La Grange Middle School one act play group will have a free public performance of their play “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Luella Mc-Mahon, based on the famous story by Edgar Allen Poe, on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the LGISD Performing Arts Center. Admission is free. These students are performing this play at the district competition in Navasota earlier in the week.

Are you ready for the cold? I’m not. The weather forecast calls for temperatures to drop below freezing on Saturday with sleet possible. The temperature could drop to the high teens on Sunday morning and stay below freezing the whole day.

Schulenburg Jr. Livestock Sale Moving Up Due to Weather

Organizers of the Schulenburg Junior Livestock Show moved up the premium sale scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 24, in anticipation of icy weather that evening. The premium sale was supposed to begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The time has been moved up to 1 p.m. so that the event will end before the cold weather is expected to arrive.

Foundation Poured at New Hostyn Church

The concrete began flowing about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning as the foundation for the new Hostyn Catholic Church started being poured. The pour was delayed one day because it was too cold Monday to pour the concrete. The old church was destroyed by a gas explosion on June 9, 2022. The new church is expected to be completed next spring. In total, 440 yards of concrete were poured to form this foundation.

Fayette County Retired Teachers Meet

The Fayette County Retired Teachers Association met on Jan. 12, at New Life Methodist Church in La Grange, with 22 members in attendance. Guest presenter Becka Yepes led the group in a seated workout and stretching routine to promote the importance of mobility and flexibility.

Flatonia Livestock Show Awards Top Honors, $213,225 in Sales

The Flatonia Livestock Show took place last week and concluded with the awards presentation and premium sale held Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Carl Smith Pavilion on the Flatonia ISD Campus. Flatonia 4-H and FFA members exhibited 77 entries. In the premium sale, the grand and reserve champion winners all sold for the maximum amount set by rules. Total proceeds amounted to $213,225.
