The Red & White Gallery is hosting a special popup exhibit of recent works by William Anzalone as he turns 90. The iconic artist celebrates his landmark birthday with nine new paintings along with more recent works. Anzalone will be present at the opening on Fayetteville’s Square on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 4-7 p.m.

While Anzalone is well established as a major Texas artist, his roots began on the East Coast. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1935 and was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, earning a B.A., M.A. and the Rotch Prize in architecture. In 1956 he attended Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, studying architectural design. In 1958 he also attended the Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Anzalone came to Houston in 1959 and began lecturing at the University of Houston where he would rise to full Professor in the Art Department before retiring in 1993. Soon after arriving in Texas, he also began showing work at the Houston gallery Meredith Long & Company, a relationship that would last for 60 years (1959-2019).

Anzalone and his wife, Louise, established a home on the outskirts of Round Top in 1983 and moved there permanently in 1987. Anzalone continues to live and work in his Round Top studio, with the landscapes surrounding his studio a constant influence on his work.

Anzalone’s new paintings continue his exploration of the landscape, characterized by sweeping vistas depicted in expressive brush strokes. While his landscapes are representational, he approaches his images in more abstract terms, giving the work a powerful presence. Several of his new pieces have introduced the human form, a departure from his work over the past dozen years.

The Red & White Gallery has exhibited Anzalone’s paintings and pastels since 2013, where he has been featured in seven (soon to be eight) one-man shows, and several group shows. In January 2026, he will be the focus of a one-man exhibit at the Beeville Museum of Art in Beeville, Texas. Anzalone’s new work can be viewed online at www.redandwhitegalleryonline. com.
