At Senior Connections, an activity center dedicated to seniors aged 55 and up, friendships flourish over games, delicious food, and camaraderie. Located in Schulenburg, with satellite centers in Weimar and Flatonia, the center is excited for the week ahead.

As the doors swing wide Monday, July 21 at 9 a.m. members will be greeted with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the warm smiles of our devoted volunteers. “We are incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteers who selflessly serve our members, preparing meals and creating a welcoming atmosphere,” said a center representative.

Monday marks the official Cookie Roundup Day. Members who enjoy baking are encouraged to bring their freshly baked cookies, which will be shared with community supporters like our Lunch and Learn speakers and bingo callers. Giving back to those who help sustain our programs is delightful.

A mouthwatering homecooked meal of hamburger steaks, buttery potatoes, our renowned green salad topped with fresh fruit, and delicious desserts members make will please everyone. Anyone interested in contributing a dessert can contact Stephanie at the center.

The Lunch and Learn program will highlight a talk by Carolyn Heinsohn, a local historian and spokesperson for the Czech Heritage Center in La Grange. After her presentation, we will discuss a potential visit to the center this fall, offering an enriching experience for our members. Additionally, we are thrilled to welcome the County Commissioner of Precinct 4, Drew Brossmann, as the bingo caller, who may even bring along a colleague for extra fun.

Our Flatonia location, Flatonia Methodist Church, will follow the same schedule on July 22, opening at 9 a.m. Members can join for chair exercises at 9:45 a.m. A new addition to the routine will be blood pressure checks in Flatonia on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Dr. Amy Gutierrez from the La Grange Family Health Center will be available from 10-11 a.m. for anyone needing this service. Then we can dive into a hearty homemade lunch featuring shepherd’s pie, house salad, and garlic bread. Once again, our members will graciously provide desserts, allowing everyone to join in the joy of sharing.

Harry Siter with Southern Produce Art Gallery will drop by for the Lunch and Learn program after the meal. Members look forward to hearing about their creative space, what they have done with the historic building, and the continued plans for this cool addition to the town.

New bingo caller for the day will be Debbie V. from Flatonia Medical Center, known for her entertaining spins on the classic game.

On July 23, we return to Schulenburg on Wednesday, our most popular day. After a morning filled with games and laughter, members will feast on mouthwatering fried chicken from Oakridge Smokehouse, paired with buttery potatoes and salad.

The fun continues as Deanie Crim from Schulenburg Family Fitness arrives at noon to lead the bingo game, ensuring plenty of laughter and enjoyment.

We wrap up the week on July 25 with Artful Friday class at Senior Connections. Participants will continue to work on their art journals, led by Stephanie Shroyer, filling in for Jaime Janda, who will bring a surprise project to engage everyone. Next month, we will return to our partner’s Arts for Rural Texas building at 1206 Lyons Ave in Schulenburg. This well-designed classroom space is perfect for offering diverse art classes. August will offer two opportunities: acrylic painting with Susan Grooms and a mosaic workshop led by Stephanie, who has years of experience teaching children and adults. The mosaic classes will continue until the first of the year, allowing more people to create a project of their choice once the basics have been acquired.

Spaces for these art courses are limited, so interested participants should register early. For more class details or to obtain a schedule for the rest of the year, call Senior Connections at (979) 743-3227. Open to anyone in the community 55 and over. You don’t have to be a member of Senior Connections to join in. However, you won’t want to resist becoming a member once you meet our fun gang.

Membership for Senior Connections is free, and the food is fine. The Schulenburg center is at 1111 Bowman Ave., while the Flatonia gatherings occur at the Flatonia Methodist Church at 403 E. North Main St.
