Senior Connections serves as a vibrant gathering place for seniors aged 55 and up in Fayette, Colorado, and Lavaca counties. It’s a welcoming community for active seniors with free membership, fantastic food, and fun activities. Senior Connections meets in several locations: Schulenburg at Wolters Park (1111 Bohlmann Ave.), Weimar at the First United Methodist Church (301 W. Saint Charles St.), and Flatonia at Newman Hall in the Flatonia Methodist Church (403 East North Main).

Doors are open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. and members will be greeted with coffee and smiles from our dedicated volunteers. Join for lively games of dominoes or cards, or enjoy chatting with friends. Lunchtime routine starts at 11:15 a.m. with prayer, announcements, and a blessing before lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. Every day ends with bingo.

We’re excited to enjoy a meal prepared by Connie Koopman, our illustrious mayor and board member, on Oct. 6 in Schulenburg. The meal will feature chicken spaghetti, our house salad with seasonal fruit, and garlic bread sure to fill the room with a mouthwatering aroma. We’ll also spotlight member Michelle Wright to learn more about her life journey and experiences. The day wraps up with a bingo game at 12:30 p.m. hosted by the charming Elizabeth Fox at Freyburg Hall.

The schedule remains consistent across all locations, but in Weimar, domino enthusiasts often arrive before 9 a.m. in Weimar on Wednesdays and we’re always ready with coffee. Executive director and head chef, Amanda Kridel, will serve tamale pie, complemented by fresh vegetables and house salad. Members bring desserts. If you would like to sign up to share a dessert, let us know. We appreciate our volunteers, who often provide delicious desserts. Today’s Lunch and Learn features the Weimar Police Department, which will discuss the National Night Out program and maybe introduce us to the new police chief. Bingo follows at 12:30 p.m., with Anne Frye from First Texas Home Health, who always brings great prizes and a cheerful smile.

We anticipate a bustling crowd for lunch on Oct. 8 in Schulenburg featuring Oakridge Smokehouse fried fish, hush puppies, coleslaw, and mac and cheese. With our numbers soaring, three members will bring cakes for dessert. Bingo will follow, hosted by Chula from Wellsential Nursing Facilities of Hallettsville, utilizing high-tech bingo calling.

Artful Friday classes on Oct. 10 meet at Arts For Rural Texas, our partners in this offering, 1206 S. Lyons Ave. in Schulenburg, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., followed by a meal. Preregistration is required. Diana Chafin leads a month long workshop on found object assembled art, while Stephanie Shroyer continues the mosaic course. Both classes are full, but a new round will start next month.

On Oct. 18, we’ll visit the Czech Heritage Center in La-Grange for their Fall Festival. Sign up by Oct. 8 to secure transportation. In November, don’t miss our trip to the amphitheater in La Grange to see “Calendar Girls” performed by the Fayette County Community Theater on Nov. 9. Seats are limited, so call the center to reserve your spot.

Our Thanksgiving gathering will also be held at KC Hall in Schulenburg on Nov. 12, followed by our Christmas celebration at the KC Hall on Dec. 10.

We invite you to join us at Senior Connections, where membership is free, the food is delightful, and the fellowship is warm.
