  • Ralph Fisher was a recent speaker in Schulenburg and was quite entertaining with his stuffed buzzard Oscar. We must have him back again, he has many stories to share of his interesting life as a rodeo clown and animal entertainer.

At Senior Connections, our mission is simple yet profound: to enhance the quality of life for seniors in Fayette and Lavaca counties. We are committed to fostering community and camaraderie, and we invite all individuals aged 55 and up to join our vibrant gatherings. Membership is entirely free, and our meals are nothing short of delightful.

Our program’s daily schedule, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. welcomes members with fresh coffee and various games. From dominoes to card games and puzzles, there’s something for everyone to enjoy until we prepare for our home-cooked meals at 11:15 a.m. Members line up at 11:30 a.m. for a hearty meal, which is preceded by a blessing of the food, the Pledge of Allegiance, and time for prayer concerns and announcements. Afternoons are fun-filled, highlighted by our popular bingo games sponsored by local businesses and community members.

Join us on Monday, Aug. 25 at 1111 Bohlmann Ave. in Wolters Park, next to the Boys and Girls Club. After a morning of engaging games, we’ll savor a delicious meal prepared by our dedicated caterer, Mayor Connie Koopmann. The menu features King Ranch casserole, mixed vegetables, garlic bread, and desserts from our wonderful members. From 12-12:30 p.m. members can enjoy free time to socialize before Peyton Steele from Amedisys Home Health Systems joins us for bingo at 12:30 p.m.

Visit us at Flatonia Methodist Church, 403 E. North Main St., in Newman Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Members can get their blood pressure checked between 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Our home-cooked meal includes meatloaf, buttered potatoes, our famous house salad, and garlic bread. We also invite members to bring desserts to share. This day features a special musical performance by Phil Hurley from the Bugle Boy listening venue in La Grange. We are so grateful for this new partnership. He will play from 12-12:45 p.m. and play bingo at 1 p.m. with Debbie V. from Flatonia Health Center.

We return to Schulenburg for another exciting day on Wednesday, Aug. 27. After a busy morning, enjoy a feast from Oakridge Smokehouse featuring barbecue brisket and chicken, served with potato salad, beans, and desserts provided by three of our members. From 12-1 p.m. Deanie Crim and her team from Schulenberg Family Fitness will lead our bingo games, ensuring plenty of fun for everyone. One of our team members will finish the afternoon by calling the bingo game.

We are hosting a fan drive on Thursday, Aug. 28 to assist those in need in response to the summer heat. We’re collecting new or gently used fans at the Schulenburg center for distribution to individuals on our list. If you or someone you know needs a fan, contact the center at (979) 743-3227 to register. Drop off of donated fans culminates at 8 a.m. on the Aug. 28. Fan pickup will be conducted in a drivethrough format starting at 9 a.m at 1111 Bohlmann Ave.

Our August month-long art classes conclude on Friday, Aug. 29 with a session at 1206 Lyons Ave. The mosaic class will focus on grouting pieces, while Susan Groom’s class will finalize their paintings. Next month, we’ll introduce new courses, including holiday-themed projects with Martha Beckmann and a second round of mosaic classes with Stephanie Shroyer. Registration is essential, as space is limited; call (979) 743-3227 to sign up or join the waitlist.
