Senior Connections Gearing Up For Fall
Senior Connections is gearing up for an exciting week of activities and camaraderie as summer transitions to fall (even though the thermometer disagrees). This vibrant gathering place for seniors, located at 1111 Bohlmann Ave. in Schulenburg and also at our satellites at the First United Methodist Church in Weimar and Flatonia Methodist Church in Flatonia, invites local seniors to come together for games, delicious meals, and enriching experiences.
Doors open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. and seniors aged 55 and up are encouraged to join the festivities, enjoy home-cooked meals, and make new friends. Membership is free, and we welcome new members daily. For those looking to support our programs, donations of bingo prizes or volunteer help are always appreciated.
On Monday morning, Sept. 8, the doors will open at 9 a.m. in Schulenburg, welcoming members with warm coffee and friendly smiles from our dedicated volunteers. The morning will be filled with activities, including dominoes, sequence games, and puzzles at our newly introduced puzzle table, which creates a space to accommodate our enthusiastic puzzle builders.
This day’s menu features a special treat: Oakridge Smokehouse’s famous fried fish, hush puppies, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese. Our generous members will contribute desserts, showcasing their baking talents or supporting local bakeries.
The highlight of the day will be a member spotlight featuring Jaime Janda, granddaughter of Irene Janda, kin to many of our members, and one of our beloved art instructors. Jaime will share her life story and aspirations, bringing her unique perspective to our community. Following her program, a representative from True Care Living will lead our bingo game, ensuring a lively afternoon filled with fun.
We invite seniors to the Flatonia Methodist Church on Tuesday, Sept. 9, where the atmosphere is bright and welcoming in Newman Hall. Our Lunch and Learn Speaker will provide our home-cooked meal today. They will provide a delicious meal of meat-loaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, and cobbler. They have cooked for us for holiday gatherings, and the food was delicious. The day will feature a special “Lunch and Learn” session with Jesenia Manzano from Jordan Ranch, who will discuss Jordan Ranch’s invaluable contributions to our community. Bingo enthusiasts will enjoy a game hosted by representatives from Crown Hospice, promising another day of excitement.
Wednesday, Sept. 10 brings us back to Schulenburg for another engaging day. Lunch will be provided by Connie Koopmann Catering, featuring grilled chicken. Volunteers will prepare buttered potatoes and a fresh seasonal salad topped with fresh fruit, with desserts contributed by multiple members. The afternoon bingo session will be hosted by Chyla with Wellsential Healthcare from Hallettsville, ensuring plenty of fun.
Friday Sept. 12, marks “Artful Friday,” where our creative members will gather to craft seasonal projects in classes led by Martha Beckman and mosaics in Stephanie Shroyer’s class at 1206 S. Lyons Ave. in Schulenburg.
These classes are fully booked as members signed up in advance. If you are interested in next month’s classes featuring Narrative Assemblage Sculptures with Dianna Chafin or a new round of mosaics with Stephanie Shroyer, contact the center at (979) 743-3227 to register. A communal lunch will be provided.
