Barton Family Hits Half Century of Ownership of The Record in 2026

In 2026 The Fayette County Record will have been owned by the Barton Family for 50 years, nearly half of the life of the newspaper, which has been continuously printed for 104 years.

To get a jump on the celebration, the staff of the newspaper held an in-house food drive to benefit the AMEN Food Pantry. Their goal was to raise 50 pounds of food (coordinating with the 50-year milestone) for each of the four branches of the Barton family tree that own the newspaper (equaling 200 pounds of food). The staff was actually able to collect 271 pounds of food (pictured above), and donated it to the pantry last week, and then surprised the owners (pictured below) at the annual newspaper Christmas party last week with the news of the donation in their name.

It was back in 1976 that the Richard L. Barton Sr. family purchased The Fayette County Record from Bonner and Virginia McMillion. The paper is still completely owned by members of the Barton family, making it one of the few stand-alone family- owned community papers left in Texas.
