A Full Week of Friendship Ahead at Senior Connections

  • Frank Lafferty was in the “Senior Spotlight” this month in Schulenburg. Frank is such a kind and gentle soul with a wonderful sense of humor. It was very touching to hear his life story and how he made his way to Flatonia and to Senior Connections. We are lucky to have him as part of our Family.

Schedule for the week of Jan. 19-23 includes:

Monday, Jan.19

Join in Wolters Park at 1111 Bohlmann Ave. for the Cookie Round-Up. If you enjoy baking, consider bringing cookies to share. We will package them as gifts for dedicated bingo callers and Lunch and Learn speakers. Meal for the day will be prepared by Connie Koopmann of Koopmann Catering and features beef and vegetable stew, cornbread, a garden-fresh salad topped with seasonal fruit, and desserts baked by members. Jamie Janda, a volunteer and instructor for Artful Friday classes, will present her show “Scraps of Life,” currently on display at Texas A&M, featuring interesting scrapbooks that tell Texas family histories. At 12:30 p.m. Amanda from Anytime Fitness will join for bingo.

Tuesday, Jan. 20

Find us at the First United Methodist Church, 301 W. Saint Charles St. in Weimar. True Care Living nurses will be circulating to check blood pressures while members play games, helping everyone keep an eye on their health. The delicious meal includes chicken and sausage gumbo over white rice made by Amanda Kridel, a fresh seasonal salad, and desserts by our members. The days Lunch and Learn program features Dana Lauer from Lucy’s Project, a local animal rescue organization. Afterward, Alyssa with 1st Texas Home Health will lead a lively game of bingo.

Wednesday, Jan. 21

We return to Wolters Park for a special meal from Oakridge Smokehouse, featuring barbecue brisket, chicken, potato salad, beans, and, of course, desserts from members. We will celebrate January birthdays, welcoming all January-born members from all locations to join. Be sure to arrive by 11 a.m. for a group photo with the birthday cake. After this hearty meal, we’ll jump right into bingo, with Jeffrey from The Oaks in Columbus calling the games.

Thursday, Jan. 22

This month’s adventure takes us to Robert’s Steakhouse in Flatonia, followed by a trip to the Lyric Theater to watch the movie “Cocoon.” We will visit Terry’s Ice Cream Parlor for a sweet treat afterward. Please remember to sign up for this outing by Jan. 13, as we will be carpooling and need your information to organize the event.

Friday, Jan. 23

From 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Arts for Rural Texas, 1206 Lyons Ave., classes continue with Fernanda Kirkwood guiding air-dry clay projects and Jaime Janda substituteteaching my mosaic art class while I heal from surgery. Lunch will be served following the classes. Registration is required; call (979) 743-3227 to have your name added to the list for upcoming classes. Next month, we have Acrylic painting with Susan Grooms, and it’s our last month of mosaics. Currently, all classes are full, but you can get on the wait list.
