The La Grange Cross Country team had their season opener at the Gonzales Relay meet on August 22. Each member of a team of three runners on the varsity ran a one mile lap and then repeated the series for a total of two miles.

Tuesday was a big night for local volleyball teams. La Grange went on the road and knocked off Sealy 20-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-20 to improve to 26-5 this season in advance of a big match at 4:30 p.m. Friday at home against Columbus.

LA VERNIA – It was only for a few minutes in the first half, but La Grange actually trailed for the first time this season in Friday’s game against La Vernia. But what a powerful, dominant comeback the Leps staged over the final three quarters, eventually winning 29-9 over the Bears.

The Flatonia football team improved to 2-1 this season with a totally dominating 40-0 victory over Woodsboro Friday. Matthew Kozelsky rushed for three touchdowns and also snagged two interceptions to lead the Bulldogs. Gabe Smith and Braydon Mica also ran for touchdowns Friday fpor the Bulldogs. Flatonia plays at Shiner St. Paul this week, a team the Bulldogs knocked off 28-21 last season.

The Schulenburg Shorthorns’ 2-0 start to the football season this year has folks in town fired up about the team’s prospects. Businesses throughout the city are hanging team flags and colors in support of the Horns. The Shorthorns started the season with a 8-6 win over Luling. They followed that up with a 13-7 victory over Van Vleck. At the end of week two the Horns already tied the number of wins from last year’s doleful 2-8 season.

COLUMBUS – This one was over in a hurry. The La Grange football team (looking every bit worthy of their new No. 6 state ranking in the AP poll) jumped out to a 32-0 lead in the first half Friday against Columbus and then coasted in the second half to a 46-17 victory over the Cardinals.

Twenty matches into the season things are going really well for the La Grange volleyball team. The Lady Leps have a 17-3 record, won the Schulenburg tournament and jumped into the state rankings (and are now No. 7 in Class 4A).

Houston Baptist University sophomore Blair Gillard (a La Grange High School graduate) has been one of the leaders of HBU’s volleyball team, which has gotten off to a 4-0 start this season.
