La Grange High School track athletes Kole Parchman and Lauren Zbranek competed at the Carl Lewis High School Invitational track meet in Houston Jan. 16. They competed for the LC Express track team against hundreds of other athletes. Zbranek ran the 200 meters in a time of 28.13 and the 400 meters in a time of 1:04.09.

Friday was opening night of district play for a trio of boys basketball teams in Fayette County, and La Grange, Schulenburg and Flatonia all prevailed with important victories. For the Leps, they went to Smithville and beat the Tigers 72-61 led by a 20-point night from Tyler Caughman and 15 points from freshman Kayton Powell.

Officially, Giddings was the opponent against the La Grange girls basketball team Tuesday. But really it was the Lady Leps who were their own worst enemy. The La Grange girls really struggled from the free-throw line, making just 10 of 34 shots and Giddings surged to a 53-39 victory in an important District 21-4A contest.

The Schulenburg boys basketball team is state-ranked and was a state semifinalist last season. But for much of their game Friday in La Grange, the Leopards gave the Shorthorns all they could handle. In the end however, the Shorthorns were stronger, beating La Grange 46-39, and the No. 12-ranked Schulenburg boys improved to 14-6.

The La Grange girls basketball team started District 21-4A in strong fashion, going on the road Friday and knocking off Caldwell 54-17. Freshman Melanie Wenkebach led the way for the Lady Leps, scoring 15 and Alex Mueller added nine. The Lady Leps host Giddings Tuesday night in their next district matchup.

Lacing up their cleats for the 2016 season, the La Grange high school boys and girls soccer teams hit the field Jan. 5 for scrimmages with the regular season starting later this week. Both team’s coaches: Westley Miller (boys) and Chrisy Marshall (girls) hope for a successful year, and plan to fight for a shot in the playoffs.
