Bette Mae Zies

Bette Mae Zies, 88, of Carmine, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013. Bette was born on Jan. 3, 1925 in Grand Rapids, Mich. to Mathew and Mary (Frain) Boynton. She met the love of her life, Eugene M. Zies in Fort Wayne, Ind. and they were married Aug. 21, 1948. They moved to Texas in 1968 where Eugene was transferred for work. Bette was a homemaker and enjoyed  working around the home and farm. The main love of Bette’s life was her family, especially her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine. She is survived by her daughter, Jeannie Johnson and husband, James; son, Harry Zies and wife, Patricia; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Bette is preceded in death by her husband Eugene; son, Raymond; parents and brother, Duane Pierce.

Jeffrey Dwayne Michael

Jeffrey Dwayne Michael, 40, of Columbus died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Houston Methodist Hospital. Jeffrey was born in Houston on Oct. 2, 1973, the son of Harold and Allean (Krenek) Michael. He married Brandi Shuford on May 5, 2001 at  the First United Methodist Church in Sealy. He was employed as a Line Mechanic and worked his way up to Operations Supervisor. Jeffrey was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a loving husband, loved his family and was a friend to many. He was well known to his family for his annual fish fry. He is survived by his wife, Brandi, of twelve years; in-laws,

Carol Frances (Wendler) Skelton

Carol Frances (Wendler) Skelton, 59, of La Grange died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013. She was born in Brenham on Aug. 31, 1954, the daughter of Carl Louis Wendler and Frances Elizabeth (Brossmann) Wendler. She married Jackie Skelton
March 17, 1984 in Hallettsville. She was a special education teacher for 35 years. She worked for St. Paul Catholic  Schools in Shiner and Devereux School in Victoria. She retired from the school district in Hallettsville after 30 years. Carol was a graduate of Texas A&M and University of Houston and held two masters degrees in special Education and Counseling. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, La Grange Citizens Police Academy and Citizens on Patrol and American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary. Skelton was very involved at her church serving in Stephen Ministry and the Parish Aide Committee, as well as in other organizations. She was an avid volunteer for Second Chance and AMEN.

George Joseph Kovar

George Joseph Kovar died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013. He was born in Ellinger, the son of Joe and Sophie Baca Kovar Feb. 17, 1934. He was a veteran. Survivors include his wife, Opal Lilie Kovar of Sealy; daughters, Sandy Wellbrock (Kenny) of Brenham, Doris Widacki (Steve) of Katy and Louis Roznovsky and friend Geary Maples of Houston; grandchildren; and great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Pete Kovar, Sr. and Edwin Kovar. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Frydek. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Tommy Lee Ray

Tommy Lee Ray, 75, of Muldoon, died Dec. 21, 2013. Tommy was born the son of Glen and Rosabel Williford Ray 
in Muldoon on Sept. 28, 1938. Visitation was held on Dec. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. at All Faiths of the Pines Funeral Home in
Smithville. Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church in Muldoon, Friday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. Interment followed in the Pittman Cemetery in Muldoon. Tommy graduated from Flatonia High School in 1957. He met and married Velma (Doll) Lee Kramer in 1959. Tommy is survived by his wife Velma (Doll); son Tommy and wife Arlene Ray of Richmond,; daughter Tracy and husband William Farrington of Katy; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. All Faith of the Pines of Smithville was in charge of fu neral arrangements.

Kenneth A. Jackson

Kenneth A. Jackson, 65, of Grand Island, Neb. formerly of La Grange died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island, Neb. He was born in Mount Pleasant on May 7, 1948, the son of J.D. Jackson and Laura (Mitchell) Jackson. He served the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1969. He served aboard the USS AJAX. He is survived by mother, Laura Faye Jackson-Watkins and stepfather, James; three brothers, Jim Jackson and wife, Pat of La Grange,  Joe Jackson and wife, Nancy of Big Lake and Larry Jackson of La Grange and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, J.D. Jackson and brother, John Jackson. Graveside Services were held in the La Grange City Cemetery at 2 p.m. on  Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013. Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange was in charge of arrangements.
